Saudett awoke to the sound of that repetitive thumping in the air and the screaming of the metallic wings diving down from high above the island.

Dressing in her armor as quickly as possible, she ran outside to a scene of complete chaos.

The Nyra swarmed the air as hundreds of the propeller-driven crafts swept in.

The Rykling flying machines spun as a handful of Nyra Lancers met them, the sharpened blades on the contraption wings shearing through her Skaad Lancer's flesh by the dozens.

Some of the Nyra’s spears met their marks as they collided with the aircraft. Three machines lost control and struck the earth, while others missed the island entirely and fell into oblivion below.

Projectiles whistled down into the screaming horde as the machines dived. Piercing through hounds and hulks in scores, leaving them wailing and bleeding in the dirt. The Children shrieked, yowled, and thrashed about, unable to do anything against the flying contraptions.

The crafts reached the vertex of their dive and began climbing once more. Slowly.

A dozen muscular grey, ape-like children leaped into the air, latching on to a few of the lowest flying crafts. Their weight careened the contraptions out of control, crashing them into the ground. Some burst into flames as blue and red mist exploded from them. A stout humanoid hopped out of one of the down crafts and began striking about with two hammers, cracking skulls before he was overwhelmed by the horde and ripped to shreds.

The flying machines were inclining slower, and the Skaad Lancers swarmed them and killed many of the beings piloting them. Each craft seemed to have two short, stout people huddled in them. The second would defend the craft with a crossbow, axe, hammer, or sword.

Many of the Nyra fell from the skies, dead on the winds of this Ryk Lân.

I need to do something! Saudett paced in frustration as she watched the battle. There was nothing she could do.

A second wave of aircraft appeared from above, their wings screaming. More of the Nyra and Children fell to their onslaught.

A craft came soaring in, smoke billowing from its rear, directly toward her. A crossbow bolt whistle passed Saudett’s ear and thudded into the earth beside her.

The machine did not stop.

She dove aside as it crashed into the ground. Saudett rolled to her feet to see two stocky humanoids jump from the burning craft and charge toward her, shouting in a different language. Yet she understood it. She recalled Hear-fan Skaad’s speech enchantment.

“We are Himin-dvergar! We’ll never be a slave, you Skaad bastards!”

Gesche-fan Skaad leveled her spear and counter-attacked.

The first Rykling came in with a massive tool with a “u’ shape on each end.

Saudett deflected the blow. It rattled through the shaft of her spear and into her hands. Little bastards are strong! She flicked her spear and caught him in the jaw with the butt end, causing him to stumble backward.

The other appeared and loosed a crossbow bolt at nearly point-blank range.

Twisting, it glanced her side, panging off her armor and ricocheting into the dirt.
